A thread: Take a tour of the #NautilusLive ROV Hercules! Named for the Greco-Roman god famous for his incredible strength and far-reaching adventures, this Volkswagen™ beetle-sized submersible has remotely explored the ocean since 2003.
Hercules is designed with special features that allow it to perform intricate tasks, including two manipulator arms, a high-definition video camera, many LED lights, and high-resolution mapping tools.
The upper portion of Hercules is a bright yellow flotation package constructed of “syntactic foam,” a composite material made of tiny, hollow glass balls mixed into a resin. This foam lifts Hercules and weights can be adjusted before dives to make the vehicle slightly buoyant.
There is no natural light that reaches the depths that Herc operates, so the ROV is equipped with a series of bright LED lights that illuminate the seascape it is exploring. These include two deep sea 250-watt incandescent lights and three LED lamp heads each with 28,000 lumens.
Located on the starboard side of Hercules, the junction box electrical panel (yellow square) stays protected from extreme pressures and saltwater corrosion by flooding the thick clear plastic case with mineral oil.
