Watching the #Imagine doc on bbc about how covid has hit the arts & it’s weirdly emotional. At one point in lockdown I was on almost daily calls with reps from different arts orgs. Studio production hasn’t suffered as much as live performance but ultimately they’re all linked.
The thought of another summer without festivals and gigs devastating. Many musicians & roadies haven’t had any work or financial support for about a year now. Another summer without work is unthinkable for a lot of my friends who work in touring. But it’s looking likely.
Without insurance no large-scale shows will go into production. Unfortunately the government has shown no signs of underwriting insurance for shows or providing any other kind of support
Instead, they’ve signed a Brexit deal that makes EU touring impossible for all but the biggest bands, and make using Uk crews unviable for many productions. Uk music is genuinely a world-leading export & our crews & musicians are among the highest-regarded in the world.
Everyone working in the arts is passionate about their job, their art, their craft & that really came across in the film.

I’ve yet to see even a fraction of that passion & energy & pride from anyone in government tasked with protecting the arts.

They care, but just not enough.
