🗣️thinking a lot about the increased discourse about the rise in anti-asian sentiment in this country and i have some things to say 👇👇
first, yes we know, we’ve been saying it for a while! some 2020 headlines:
it’s important to acknowledge this moment. and!

there’s a lot of history fueling anti-asian sentiment. our country has a track record of mistreating and marginalizing groups, and it impacts today's biases -- full stop.
that includes Asian folks, ranging from the Chinese Exclusion Act / the Geary Act, Japanese internment camps, exploiting Asian Americans for cheap labor (railroads, factories, mining), and more.
you think every Chinese immigrant wanted to open up a restaurant?

dig into old immigration laws that restricted Chinese laborers from immigrating or becoming citizens.

owning a restaurant was one of just a few visa loopholes they had. https://www.amazon.com/Search-General-Tso-Jennifer-Lee/dp/B00ROVGDXG
another layer - you might’ve heard folks say “i’m not really into asians.” (psst heads up that’s writing off a massive group of very diverse folks without getting to know them)

here’s my fav explainer of Asian sex stereotype origins >> @chescaleigh
here’s how that can manifest itself in queer conversations -- if you’re gay, you’re very familiar with the phrase “no fats no femmes no asians” https://twitter.com/kwprime/status/1357804473935147011?s=20
all this to say -- i’m glad we’re having this conversation and that you’re publicly supporting Asian folks by sharing things like this on instagram.

bias isn't just born. there’s a lot of history leading up to this moment, and I encourage you to learn about it.
