Freddy, Chucky, Ghostface, and Dracula. Three killers with distinct personalities and one rotating killer who sums up an idea. https://twitter.com/doubt_comes_in/status/1359234319718383616
However she asked about the movies. I see a thread. Let’s start because that’s different. We’ll start the same place. A Nightmare on Elm Street. The perfect Reagan era meditation on the failure of the previous generation.
The Exorcist. Not for anything on screen. For the point of the film. Nothing you do matters. No science. No technology. No advancement of man is meaningful in the face of a higher power be it nature or god.
Psycho. The tragedy of our greatest threat. Ourselves. Norman Bates is such a painful lost soul.
The Sixth Sense. The hope. That we find out power by facing our fears and understanding them.
I love horror deeply. I feel like at it’s best it’s about humanity and hope. The hope of Nightmare is that we learn from the failings of our predecessors. The hope of the Exorcist is we fight against everything anyway. The hope of Psycho is we see those who could be Norman.
Horror isn’t about nihilism. I’m deep in a mortality crisis honestly as my birthday approaches. And horror? It doesn’t make me think of that. It makes me think of how powerfully life fights when the universe tries to stop it. I love horror.
Thanks @DOUBT_COMES_IN for resetting me with this question. Any others
