With Blue Sky Studios shutting down today, I just want to make a thread to say that, while they were known as the Ice Age factory who just could not stop mass producing that franchise, there are some things they did that they really didn't get as much credit as they deserve.
There's no denying that the studio's greatest asset is that they can always deliver great animation. Even if they're writing can often be bad, at least they know how to make their features visually pleasing, especially with their collabs with William Joyce.
However, what people don't give them credit for is how they were the first to experiment with computer animation that resulted in many great innovations. In fact, what Sony Animation is credited for are things that Blue Sky did before...and sometimes better.
Oh, Sony were the first to push a more cartoony aesthetic onto recent animated films with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Hotel Transylvania? Then what about this movie from 2008 that did the cartoony style better than any of those films and even most movies nowadays?
Oh, Spiderverse is a revolution for creating a new style that stays true to its roots and uses CGI in a unique and innovative way? Sure, that one's great, but what about this film from 3 year prior that did the same thing?
What I'm trying to say is that Blue Sky is the overlooked pioneer that did help shape how animated features are today. Sure, they're movies are not that great, but when they did something right, they did it in an admirably incredible way.
