Obviously this is in the states but I'm hearing more and more stories like this in Ontario: individuals abusing alcohol because of the pandemic. And when you have a publicly owned and operated liquor monopoly and do nothing to limit sales, you sacrifice citizens for cash. https://twitter.com/james_m_wilt/status/1359204407196479491
The argument from the start was that liquor stores needed to be open lest we see an influx of alcoholics experiencing deadly withdrawal symptoms. But nothing has been done to limit alcohol sales, and so the problem is occurring anyways, but from abuse instead of withdrawal.
There have been a lot of half-assed measures used throughout the pandemic to ease the burden on our healthcare system, but the complete lack of changes at the government run liquor stores is going to have ramifications for possibly decades that we're just not talking about.
