Compared to Jan 2020, last month we had an extra 2251 patients in ICU across 🇬🇧

This is the equivalent of 141 extra 16 bed ICUs

This has been a superhuman effort

This has needed in many cases a dilution of care- the staff:patient ratio worse than normal.

And across 🇬🇧, 1 MILLION hours a week of extra ICU work is required

This is obviously not possible to do with existing icu staff- though they’ve tried their best

Many of these extra hours have been worked by our colleagues from Anaesthesia, theatres, medicine, surgery, and paediatrics

For which we are all very grateful

This document is an attempt to show how we can slowly try to get back to ‘normal’

But this normal cannot be back to where we had one of the lowest number of icu beds in the developed world... and a huge number of vacancies

We need a new model- perhaps 2021 year beds, with much better staffing!
