The surge of migrants and asylum seekers into Europe that peaked in 2015-16 has had profound consequences for women because most of the newcomers were young, male and from Muslim-majority countries.
A wave of sex crimes and sexual harassment caught police and politicians off guard. The xenophobic right seized the opportunity to exaggerate the crisis and argue for mass deportation. The Islamists argued that women should cover up and stay home.
My new book, "Prey: Immigration, Islam, and the Erosion of Women’s Rights," examines the scale and the nature of the problem and offers a better solution, namely a strategy for integration that will preserve rather than sacrifice women's rights.
Little attention gets paid to the many women who have been the victims of the migration crisis. I hope to rectify this in Prey.
