I am the daughter of a taxi driver. Due to our inability to pay our taxi medallion loan, my father had to file for bankruptcy. This past Friday, the bankruptcy court put a “For Sale” sign on our house. There is already an offer on our home, and the trustees are ready to sell.
Our city failed to take responsibility for the medallion crisis and the predatory lending they allowed on their watch. This betrayal had a profound impact on many immigrant families in NYC.

On Friday, we called to find out what was happening to our home and were told by the trustees of the bank that we need to come up with $100,000+ in 86 days or the house will be sold and we will be unhoused.
More than 950 medallion owners have had to file for bankruptcy. My family is one of many families who are victims of the city’s failure. Until the @NYCMayor gives taxi drivers debt relief, families will continue to lose their incomes and homes.
Taxi drivers need your advocacy. The @NYTWA already planned a number of actions this week. Amplifying them is amplifying me and my family, and countless others like mine: https://myemail.constantcontact.com/FEB--2021-Debt-Forgiveness-ACTION-ALERTS-.html?soid=1101912670699&aid=TBc-UpylmbA
I will be testifying with taxi drivers and their families at the @NYCCouncil hearing tomorrow, Wednesday, 2/10 at 10am with the Committee of Immigration (jointly with the Committee on Aging).
