As the horrible images roll, I fear we are losing sight of the root of this violence: complete and total lack of trust in elections. That was the whole point of this. It won't be fixed until we refocus on *elections*.
We're going to see broadcast media breathlessly show the loops of this violence, but few of them will ask how the system brings those who have lost confidence back, or what steps we can take to ensure transparent and well-run elections.
These questions don't make for great TV, I realize. They'd rather show the cops being assaulted or the angry people cursing as they destroy our capitol. And those images are crucial, but showing them on repeat without asking the tougher questions won't make us better.
We need to focus on the politicians - not just trump - who have spent decades undermining confidence in the system with slogans and bad legislation aimed at revving up their base. We need to talk about their misinformation and we need to correct it.
The reason conspiracies *can take hold in the first place* is that the American people have no understanding of how our system works, and that's partially the media's fault. We don't talk about the system. We talk about politics and we show entertaining videos.
