Twin fantasy, a breakdown:
(rts appreciated, also my fav album OAT)
About: The re-recording of the 2011 album, of the same name. Released on February 16, 2018, this version of the album is dubbed Twin Fantasy (Face to Face), with the original version now being called Twin Fantasy (Mirror to Mirror).
These new titles derive from the Bible verse 1 Corinthians 13:12; part of a famous chapter discussing love. The new titles are referenced multiple times throughout this version. This version of Twin Fantasy is also considered
an extension of and reflection on the original album’s
the narrative that is told from the perspective of a young, 19-year-old Will. This is evident through several changes made to the lyrics in this version and Will directly stating this in an interview about the album on his Tumblr.
My Boy (Twin Fantasy): 2018 re-recording of the opening track to CSH’s breakout Bandcamp album “Twin Fantasy.” "We did the vocals later, but the instrumental we did that day. actually, the vocals for that track were hard to get right, we went through a lot of takes.
Beach Life-in-Death: A re-recorded, new, single version of the song Beach Life-in-Death, previously seen on Car Seat Headrest’s 2011 album, Twin Fantasy. Production by Will Toledo, recording and mixing by Adam Stilson, mastered by Jason Ward.
Stop Smoking (We Love You): The third song of the re-recorded version of CSH’s Twin Fantasy, and one of only a handful that sees none, or very few changes instrumentally or lyrically. One of the easier songs to interpret, Stop Smoking (We Love You) is Will telling his partner to
simply stop smoking. On a grander scale, this song is important as it introduces Will’s partner’s smoking habit as a device for Will to explore his conflicting feelings towards the relationship (most notably through the contrast created between the overprotective-ness shown in
these lyrics and the desperate/accepting nature of those on High to Death where “Stop smoking” becomes “Keep smoking”).
Sober to Death: Sober to death, 4th track on Twin Fantasy (face to face) tells the story of someone that apparently has some type of anger issue, keeping will from seeing this person, but Will is willing to help whenever he needs it
Nervous Young Inhumans: This is the re-recorded version of “Nervous Young Inhumans”, originally seen on Car Seat Headrest’s 2011 album, Twin Fantasy. The music video for the song includes two side-by-side videos of frontman Will Toledo singing the song.
Bodys: “Bodys” is the sixth track on Car Seat Headrest’s 2018 album, Twin Fantasy (Face to Face). Like much of the rest of the album, it is a remake of the track of the same name from Twin Fantasy (Mirror to Mirror).
Cute Thing: There are some lyrical changes, replacing Dan Bejar and John Entwistle with Frank Ocean and James Brown. Toledo also removed a reference to Stanley Kubrick and “Eyes Wide Shut” from the outro. As the seventh track (and the last before the decided mood changing
“High to Death”), “Cute Thing” is more of an energetic straightforward power-pop song. Bereft of existential themes (as was the case with “Bodys”), “Cute Thing” is, ironically, on the whole (with the exception of the darkly foretelling “Lemme light your cigarette”) even more nice
High to Death: The song is subtitled “All Summer in a Night,” which is a reference to a short story by Ray Bradbury called “All Summer in a Day.” There is a sample in the song from a video adaptation of the story. [High to Death’s] place on the record is kind of interesting,
because it’s sort of a song I was conceiving of long before – just in terms of wanting to do something hazy and sort of ominous.
