An Incomplete Thread on Savior Complex:
When you are not a part of a group you are trying to advocate on behalf of & you don't listen to their needs & concerns that's what we call a savior complex. (Aka White Knight syndrome)
1/5
A savior complex is when you try to fix the needs of people around you w/o talking to people & taking their lead. It leads to performative allyship that will do more harm than good. Bc once you're finished communities are left to pick up the pieces you neglected 2/5
This is also why I think it's important to include allyship & white knight syndrome in our diversity & inclusion trainings. Some just wanna "Do good" & they don't realize they are doing harm....some people just want their name on something
*performative* 3/5
*performative* 3/5
Either way - they get to leave after their 15mins, while communities have to stay & fight to clean up the added mess of performative allyship on top of battling systemic oppression in just about every aspect of life. 4/5
So please, stop *saying* you're an ally & start actually listening to communities & following our lead on your 'ideas' to fix or change lives. 5/5
