I’ve introduced legislation into the @HouseofCommons to modernise the criminal justice system by giving legally enforceable rights to victims, power to enforce and consequences for those who ignore those rights.

Here’s is a little thread with detail... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-55986198
There’s cross party agreement on the need for a #VictimsLaw, but since the Tories promised it there’s been a million sexual offences and 350,000 rapes.

It’s not a priority for them, but it is for @UKLabour.

Our bill exceeds Tory ambitions by far.
Currently 80% of victims never hear about their rights.

When a perpetrator is arrested they are read their rights.

Our bill will ensure that victims will be read their rights at a similar time.

If not then, when? Wait a week? Month? Or never as now?
For the first time, victims will be empowered to launch a complaint directly with the parliamentary ombudsman if their rights are violated.

Currently there are barriers, explaining why - shockingly - only 20 complaints have been lodged in 3 years.
We have a fearless @VictimsComm in @VeraBaird, but I want to give more power and independence to the commisioner, plus the power of veto to the Justice select committee on future appointments.

@UKLabour believes independence for commissioners strengthens democracy, unlike govt.
Our #VictimsLaw inserts consequences into the CJS for people who flout victims rights.

A register will be kept by @VictimsComm of people who fail to uphold victim rights. It’ll be consulted for senior appointments.

Ignoring victim rights will be now career limiting.
I’ve never met anyone in the CJS, from police officer to high court judge, who doesn’t have empathy for victims.

People care. But the system doesn’t.

Perverse incentives run through the CJS like words in a stick of rock.

Our #VictimsBill changes that for the first time.
Today I introduced @UKLabour’s #VictimsBill into the Commons.

We can’t wait for govt to finally make this a priority.

So Labour’s Justice team under @DavidLammy’s leadership have drafted our own.

Our aim is simple: make victims unignorable.

This bill does just that.
