Why Star Wars: The Last Jedi is actually a great movie. (A thread)
1. It has the best VFX and cinematography out of the entire Star Wars saga. The shots here are absolutely gorgeous, and that’s something TLJ thrives in! Each shot looks like it can be a portrait on someone’s wall.
2. It tackles themes like Fallen Heroes. This is a theme that’s not tackled in Star Wars that much. We see Luke at an all time low, and he feels like he can’t be who he once was, but over the course of the movie we see how Luke realizes what he did was wrong, and he comes back.
3. Kylo Ren. He’s the best character in the Sequels, and his arc in TLJ is fantastic. He feels guilt for killing Han, and you see him struggle. Also, the force dyad with him and Rey makes his character better in TLJ, as we learn more about his descent to the Dark Side.
3. It’s the most original movie in the Sequel Trilogy. The Force Awakens gets too much criticism for being similar to A New Hope, but The Last Jedi isn’t an Empire Strikes Back rehash. It’s original, it breaks several traditions in SW, and thus makes it very interesting.
4. It makes us see Star Wars in a new light. We always see things as Good v Evil, but TLJ challenges that by making it like there’s no good or bad, it’s that both sides believe they’re doing the right thing. DJ basically symbolizes the middle man, who’s not good or bad.
5. The Throne Room duel. This scene is absolutely beautiful to look at, and it has some of the best VFX and cinematography shots out of the entire saga, and it makes me not want to look away from the screen.
6. The third act. This is where everything comes to a head. The Resistance is stuck inside of a former Resistance base on Crait, with the First Order on their tail. Seeing Luke force project himself to save them, and duel Kylo was fantastic to watch.
7. Luke Skywalker’s death. This is a great ending to his arc imo. The cinematography here is marvelous, and it brings his arc full circle with him looking at the Twin Suns on Ahch-To, like how his journey began with him looking at the Twin Suns on Tatooine.
8. It ends with the Resistance sparking hope across the galaxy. In the end, they live to fight another day. Thanks to Luke’s death, it inspires the people across the galaxy to rise up against the First Order. Ending the film with a spark of hope. Sadly TROS sort of retcons this.
Overall, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a movie that gets way too much hate, and gets so much better upon every rewatch. It’s not my favorite Star Wars movie, but as a movie in general it’s absolutely amazing!! If you dislike it, that’s fine, but it deserves way more love!!
