Last night I opened YT and saw the link to a video suggestion about Hermann Der Cherusker and “The Teutoburger Forest Massacre”.
I started watching it and it was the perfect example of how, in my point of view, the vast majority of historians are...

... just a bunch of parrots that repeat what they read in books.
The amount of adjectivization was unbelievable - all of it highly biased.
When they talked about Romans being in Germanic lands, they used verbs like “to civilize”: “The Romans wanted to civilize the barbarians”.

Oh, dear historian, you mean as in invade Germanic lands, rape the women, enslave the children, kill the men, and then exploit those who survived up to their last “dime”, taking everything away from them, from crops and grains to most of their livestock?
Curiously, if the “barbarians” fought back against their INVADERS, historians interviewed in the documentary would use terms such as “conniving”, “tricking”, “butchering”, “massacring”, “savagery”, etc., in order to describe them.
Of course, Romans are depicted as being clean. Germanic people as being filthy.
Romans worshipping their deities as something spiritual and placid. Germanic people worshipping their deities involves drinking blood, dancing naked covered in mud, and getting high on some substance.

Yes... Start watching ANY movie or TV show about "barbarians" and it is just a matter of time before the "let's party and get shit-faced with girls whose boobs are hanging out" scene comes up.
I wonder how this logic works in a historian's mind.
Norsemen, for example, could build ships of highly level of hydrodynamics and maneuverability. Their blacksmiths were unbeatable, forging swords of unparalleled craftsmanship.

They were highly socially organized – women had the right to property, divorce, leadership, vote, etc.
Oh, but then…voilá…they would turn around, get drunk, naked, and launch themselves into endless orgies?

Oh, and they were always scheming against each other? (... even though it was a society absolutely based on honor and loyalty) … Oh, and they didn’t bathe? Their clothes and hair were always filthy…. Oh, and they were greedy little bastards that only thought about gold?
What bizarre, contradictory behavior, isn’t it?
But then again, I wonder who was responsible for the way European history was told for over a thousand years.
Well, lo and behold, THE CHURCH!
And how did priests – who were the historians, by the way – depict “barbarians”?

That’s where historians get this “filter” from – endless centuries of indoctrination regarding pagan peoples by the church. “Oh, the dirty, conniving, ignorant, blood-thirsty barbarians”.
Where did the church base its foundation if not Rome?
Where did the church base its foundation if not Rome?
When are we going to see even just one documentary showing that the Viking raids began not because gold-addict Norsemen, but due to CHRISTIANS coming up north and seizing their trade routes, villages, and resources?
History is nothing but IDEOLOGY disguised as teaching.
History is nothing but IDEOLOGY disguised as teaching.
So, stop watching these movies and TV series that are nothing but PURE CRAP about the pagan peoples of Europe.
