/6 @fgi_nls installed a @RIEGL #VZ2000i in a protective cover to monitor the #forest in #Hyytiälä right next to #SMEARII and @ICOS_RI @HyytialaHY
/6 The #lidar measures surrounding #forest from 30 m height detecting #IndividualTree up to 100 m distance. #3DScans are made every hour, around the clock.
/6 The #lidar has successfully captured a complete growth season between April and October 2020 totaling over 5000 scans with 600M points in each. The #lidar monitors the growth of hundreds of trees in the scan area.
/6 We expect the #lidar to provide new insights in daily and seasonal dynamics of #IndividualTree in boreal #forest and how these link with #hydrologicalcycle, #carboncycle, and #climatechange
/6 Now the #lidar measures #snow accumulating on #forest and waits for the #spring and the start of a new growing season
BONUS We have also made available some #opensource tools we implemented to read in #LAZ #pointcloud. Source and documentation are in @ZENODO_ORG: http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4309576
