/ Northern C.I., CT's only supertax prison, was closed yesterday. This is a HUGE win and it deserves celebration. But also, the the Governor's announcement was silent on policy changes that will accompany the closure. This should be cause for concern.
/ In fact, the Commissioner said the population reduction at Northern was due to the staff's “exceptional interpersonal skills [and] superior conflict resolution abilities.” Ummmm… what? After Northern was just sued last week for cruel and unusual punishment. Yikes...
/ The Governor meanwhile failed to highlight the work of organizers and advocates who have been condemning Northern for years, while simply framing the closure as a budget solution.
/ Particularly concerning is that the announcement did not condemn Northern. Without clearly denouncing the facility's legacy, the administration will not address extreme isolation throughout the DOC.
/ We cannot have the forms of punishment sanctioned at Northern exported to other facilities. This is why legislators MUST take action this year. @stopsolitaryct's PROTECT Act has a fairly good blueprint. #ProtectCT https://www.stopsolitaryct.org/legislative-advocacy
