Sometimes I am nostalgic for events that make one realize just how screwed up the world is today. Imagine naive students driving in notoriously unreliable British cars across the Middle East to Burma without getting kidnapped, robbed, shot or killed.

The 70's were the last window to travel around the world overland. Iran, Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq were nice boring places with friendly people. Hippies bought drugs and "chilled" in Kabul. Lonely Planet came from this period. Tony and Maureen cashed out. https://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/09/travel/a-lonely-planet-founder-looks-back.html
I highly recommend reading earlier travel guides by Murray, Baedaker and even Temple Fielding. Very non PC comments on the locals, nostalgic snapshots of cheap deals and vignettes of the pre globalization planet. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/travel_news/article-2733416/The-riotously-PC-travel-guides-The-informed-detailed-authoritative-unguardedly-rude-Baedeker-Guides.html
This bizarre eBay ad kinda sums up travel today. Someone wants to sell their designer suitcase for $8,312.78 under a overly hip picture of the word "Terrorist" Travel is so yesterday. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Rimowa-x-DIOR-Original-Topas-Trunk-Multiwheel-blue-LIMITED-EDITION/303609041778?hash=item46b0825372:g:ciUAAOSwyoBe-cFv
