Having studied peace & conflict from a Swedish perspective I've been thinking about how completely normal it is for Swedish actors to be critical of policies & practices in the Global South, while looking inward is often seen as irrelevant (1/n) https://twitter.com/evaensuecia/status/1359052086411997191
The current state of affairs in Sweden includes a lack of transparency, a limited independent/critical press, and public institutions demonising and/or silencing dissenting voices. Those factors have been demonstrated in research to challenge foundations for peace. (2/n)
The perceived irrelevance of looking inwards and being critical of your own society is visible in so many areas in Sweden, including public health, conflict and racism. It's concerning that critical thinking on social and governmental policy appears to be frowned upon. (3/n)
If critical thinking is encouraged with regard to studying foreign populations and behaviours, why is it demonised or disregarded domestically? (4/n)
...I guess that's rhetorical, I have a hunch why. Fear, nationalism, racism, and institutional ego. (Fin)
