A short topic about the French Main Battle Tank Leclerc. First things first. The tank was never called AMX-56. Neither it's Le Clerc. The tank is designated simply as Leclerc named after famous French General Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque.
Leclerc MBT's are separated in to two main variants. EMAT or État-major de l'armée de terre which can be translated as Standard of the Army General Staff... more or less.
And then we have second main variant, the Leclerc TROP or Tropicalisée, so in simple words a tropical variant for the UAE Army.
Leclerc EMAT is separated in to several variants. The Series 1, which is further separated in to Tranche 1, Tranche 2, Tranche 3, Tranche 4 and Tranche 5. Tanks from these Tranches had most of the technical problems, and were mostly disassembled.
Leclerc Series 2, is further separated in to Tranche 6, Tranche 7, Tranche 8 and Tranche 9. These vehicles solved most of the reliability issues, included upgrades like air conditioners and improved electronics.
Final Leclerc version produced is the Series 3 also known as Series XXI. This production series further separates in to Tranche 10 and Tranche 11. These vehicles have improved armor, electronics and other features.
Currently under the larger Scorpion program. Leclerc MBT's that stay in service will be upgraded to the so called Standard F1 or XLR. This will include improved armor, electronics and probably other components of the tank.
In the past there was also offer for improved Leclerc for Turkish Army. It was never built but the proposal included improved and redesigned turret, without the weak zone in gunner primary sight area.
