I wrote a dissertation about this kind of thing. In my last year of university, I did a Gender and Education module.

It was one of the most intensely academic things I’ve ever experienced but at the same time it was a topic that transfixed everyone who took it. https://twitter.com/lizzyxlucha/status/1359029832902967296
It’s a topic that once people start digging into you realise that you know all the issues that you are hearing about but it’s a relief for them to be put into words.
The biggest thing I took away from the course was that it’s not just women that are harmed by the dominant form of masculinity but men and everyone else too.

Hegemonic Masculinity, is a unreachable ‘ideal’ that promotes domination, imperious physical strength and power seeking.
This marginalising femininity and actual healthy forms of masculinity. It’s a lose-lose.

Those that get closest to the so called ideals of masculinity, experience imposter syndrome and self hatred of any apparent unacceptable character traits.
Then those that don’t fit the supposed acceptable image of masculinity face feelings of inadequacy or frustration.

Only by learning about what oppresses you can you observe and emphasise with the fears and insecurities that drive it’s psychosis.
Google ‘hegemonic masculinity’ and ‘heteronormativity’. Simple and easily digestible terms. Eye opening in their simplicity.
