Originating in Rajasthan Phad is a religious form of scroll painting depicting folk deities Pabuji or Devnarayan.The 30 -15 ft-long canvas/cloth that is painted on is called phad. Vegetable clrs & running narrative of the lives& heroic deeds of deities characterise these.
3)Warli Paintings
2500 yr old tradition of Warli paintings of Thane & Nasik areas of Maharashtra.These showcase daily activities of the local people farming, dancing, hunting, praying etc.Twigs used to design with rice paste on mud walls of tribal houses on harvests or weddings.
4)Gond
Gondi tribe in Madhya Pradesh created bold, vibrantly coloured paintings, depicting mainly flora& fauna.Clrs come frm charcoal,cow dung,leaves&coloured soil. If you look closely, it is made up of dots &lines. Today, these styles are imitated, but with acrylic paints.
5)Madhubani Paintings
Or Mithila art originated in kingdom ofJanak(Sita’s father in Ramayana)in Nepal& today's Bihar.Folk art is practiced by women who wanted to be one with God. This art wasn’t known to outside world until the British discovered it aftr an earthquake in 1930’s.
6)Kalighat Painting or Bengal Pat
Found in mid 19th cent around Kali Temple in Calcutta.These were done on paper by group“patuas”hence Kalighata Pata.Depicted scenes of everyday life& mythological deities using earthy clrs- indigo ,ochre ,red, grey,blue&white simple& captivating.
7)Kalamkari
Meaning‘drawings with a pen’ Kalamkari is of2 types- Machilipatnam,originates frm Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh refers to block print form &Srikalahasti,originates frm Chitoor,AP is a free flowing art with a pen on fabric Mostly frm Mahabharata or Ramayana.
8)Patachitra
Cloth based scroll painting frm Odisha &West Bengal with sharp, angular bold lines depict epics,Gods &Goddesses.Originating frm 5th century in religious hubs like Puri &Konark, around same time sculpturing began.Dress style in paintings has influence of Mughal era.
9)Cheriyal Scrolls
Originating in today'sTelangana, this dying art is practised by Nakashi family only.Depicting puranas& epics,40-45 feet scrolls were an essential visual accompaniment as saints wandered around singing or narrating the epics.They resemble modern day comic panels

Originated as wall hangings behind deity in Krishna temples in Nathdwara narrating stories of Krishna colourful & intricate works of art in motifs.This distinct devotional art practice has passed frm 1generation to another& is fine example of spirituality in art.

Frm jungle tribe of Odisha, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh & Maharashtra displays glory as ‘Tree of Life’,branches r home to animals &humans, conveying beautiful relationship between man &environment . A fish-net approach, creating the border first, closing inwards on motifs.
