0000’s die each year from road traffic collisions, sedentary lifestyles and air pollution, but as soon as roads are closed to cars, people are suddenly much more willing to piggy back onto the emergency services or those with disabilities in order to further their own interests https://twitter.com/alliancedulwich/status/1358817136869855232
This isn’t about emergency access or ambulance reponse times - It’s about proposing cameras then watering a scheme down so an undefined localised access or residents permit scheme can come forward enabling the residents of Dulwich to drive from one end to the other
Why comprise the integrity of scheme so a chosen few can drive from one end of Dulwich to another? Residents making shorter local journeys need to be the first to change their travel choices
People don’t make better choices for altruistic purposed - they to need to be enabled by design. This means making to easier to walk and cycle and more difficult to drive
40% of households in neighbouring Wards do not have access to a car or van. That figure rises to 58% across Southwark http://moderngov.southwark.gov.uk/documents/s89797/Appendix%202%20Car%20Ownership.pdf
Long term, the square should be designed to enable emergency vehicles pass through, but that’s not really what the @AllianceDulwich campaign is about - and as a reminder, additional bollards had to be installed after drivers kept mounting the footway https://twitter.com/cleanairdulwich/status/1278732033892790274
And it’s worth rememberingin #wfminiholland emergency service response time decreased across after implementation of cyclways, modal filters and landscape improvements https://data.london.gov.uk/dataset/incident-response-times-fire-facts
Local business should also look at the evidence. Perception surveys in #wfminiholland showed businesses overestimated by 68% the number of visitors arriving by car. Visitors to Lea Bridge High St also wanted better crossings, less traffic and protected cycleway over car parking
All businesses benefit when streets #priortisepeople - not just the cafes https://twitter.com/jack_pritchard/status/1279401189432573953
‘A city can be friendly to people or it can be friendly to cars, but it can't be both’ - which does Dulwich want?
