Women have taken a massively unequal economic hit over the pandemic, the new @Commonswomequ report highlights today. And it’s women with caring responsibilities who have borne the brunt of it. The system simply isn’t working for many women. Here are some ways we can fix it:
/6: Right now, we are calling on the government to introduce 10 days of paid emergency parental leave to help families cope, and to make it crystal clear to employers that they should furlough parents struggling with childcare
/6: We have heard from many, many parents who’ve being targeted for redundancy because they need to care for their kids. The govt should add caring responsibilities to their list of protected characteristics, which would make this illegal
/6: The government has promised a new Employment Bill, which is a golden opportunity to ensure employers are advertising all jobs with flexible options by default. We need to make flexible working the rule, not the exception #FlextheUK
/6: And we need to get rid of old ideas that it’s just women who want to care for their kids. Stand-alone, extended, properly paid paternity leave would help change this outdated workplace culture
/6: All of this is realistic, achievable and would have big benefits for women, families and employers themselves. If you are affected by these issues, read our latest advice and info here https://workingfamilies.org.uk/advice-information/
