So exciting to be in an auditorium again! And so looking forward to the @ANU_Climate update!

@ProfMarkHowden starts. #covid has seen #climatechange take a back seat. CO2 emissions fell last year, but CO2 concentrations continue to rise. This is the variable that influences global temperature
2020 was the equal hottest year on record. 1.24 degrees above preindustrial average even with a #LaNina phenomenon in play. #Siberia and #arctic really stand out.
#BlackSummer stands out. #health #animal #environmental effects continue to resonate through our population. Human influence on these global environmental events is clear. @ProfMarkHowden @ANU_Climate
New climate science: Climate sensitivity to rise in CO2 has been underestimated. Forecast for temperature rises are sobering. 1.5 degree year 1/4 likely in the next decade, 1.5 degrees likely by 2030. More we know the worse this looks. @ProfMarkHowden @ANU_Climate
Projected increase in #heatwaves is non-linear. This is a serious issue for #health #productivity and our #future.

This warrants serious investment on health impacts.

Sea level rises - again science update suggest we’ve underestimated risk. And #economic risks are serious particularly for #Australia (as per Reserve Bank Aust)
Pretending this isn’t happening, blocking funding, research and discussion is counter productive.

Debate should be around science, our understanding, and how we can best contend with the risks.

#humanfuture @ANU_Climate
Carbon budget approach needs to be understood. ‘Net zero’ isn’t sufficient- we have a small residual carbon budget remaining. Understanding this is key for our discussion of mitigation. #covid decrease buys us ‘3.5 weeks’ of current carbon consumption
