Dear #Medtwitter.

Had to talk down an irate patient today who was yelling & swearing at the top of their lungs at caring, professional clerical staff who were trying to help, keeping the person just this side of actual violence.

The deleterious effect on staff morale was palpable, and we understand this is happening about once a day.

Clearly patients are hurting & are frustrated by our collective societal situation, as these incidents used to be exceedingly rare.

In this case the focus of anger was our staff.

Thinking about offering & obtaining deescalation/conflict management training & obv debriefing post-incident.

For those of you with more experience in this regard (unfortunately), looking for other positive suggestions!
