As we get closer to schools reopening, I want to share the latest example of the uselessness of @RecParkSF ECYC "learning hubs", one of which kid #1 has been attending since it opened at the end of Summer. Here's his attendance for maths class. The kids are just left unsupervised
They have his schedule, in print and online, yet he's been missing most classes or leaving early to watch Youtube (now blocked), play online games (now blocked), or chat/play/watch Netflix with other kids at the hub, who all have different schedules. The homework is never done.
Until recently and we started complaining with other parents, the kids had zero adults present with them most of the time and it was a free for all. Now, the counselors have decided to punish them and have them sit at their desk 9am-2:30pm with no breaks, even the scheduled ones.
Before that, he spent his days playing outside during class time, like a Summer Camp. And this is in the Sunset, where parents can be vocal and make their grievances heard. I can't even imagine what this might look like in areas where families aren't as used to express themselves
I'm glad that according to the "my kids are thriving" crowd who can afford $2K/month tutors/posh learning hubs, or can work from home and help their kids stay focused, there's "no urgency to reopen" schools, but remember that for a lot of us, the kids are left with no structure.
It's time for the City to step up, offer vaccines to teachers NOW, make sure all schools are inspected and ready for in-person YESTERDAY, and stop reopening so many superspreader businesses all over town so that we can get back in the Orange TOMORROW. They've failed so many kids.
Anyway, I have many thoughts about school reopening in San Francisco, not always coherent (or maybe nuanced? I don't know anymore), and I shared them with Amy Graff today after her call to parents. Here they are. https://www.sfgate.com/hdn/hrlm/p/fastly_redirect.html?dm=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sfgate.com%2Fbayarea%2Farticle%2Fshould-Bay-Area-schools-reopen-COVID-pandemic-15927916.php
