CRE research is a small world. When jobs open up, we're either hiring, applying or recommending others. I made a list of recommendations today & I need to say something about gender diversity in #CRE

Recommendations? Oh sure, I know what this type of job is. I know people in that city who are good at this work. Let me see
Well, I worked with him. He was my boss. Oh, that guy has the right background & could move up now. And this guy! Totally have to send his name. 2/

Do you see it? I didn't. Then, it was a gut punch. How could I make a list like that?
Well... I've been THE woman in the room for most of my career. So, duh!? The list of people I rattle off the top of my head is full of men

Ok, time to go thru all my industry contacts...
I'll start w/ title searches...
"Research" = short list, mostly men
"Strategy" = short list, mostly men
...wtf? 4/

Ok. "Director" = there we go... Wait, it's nearly everyone in my RE list bc they either were or are directors. Scratch that
I'll change the geography instead
From just the city to the state. Now, this is a good sample size. 5/

Look! I forgot she add experience in that. And I bet she's ready to move up. Remember that innovative chart of hers that became a regular report. Totally adding her to the list! 6/
I learned 1) city where I was the woman in the room hasn't changed much 2) women left research for other RE disciplines or left that city for work like me 3) women tend to use shorter job titles than men to describe themselves, like Director vs Director of Research & Strategy. 7/
And most importantly... diversity won't happen unless everyone pays attention. When you work in a industry full of men, a pop quiz to name old colleagues is a sausage fest. But, hiring & recommendations aren't a pop quiz. Work to find candidates. Ask other women to help. 8/
That's what happened to me. The first woman to hire me asked for recommendations. Qualified women needed to be on this list & all the other lists until we're all doing the work we want with the pay we deserve. 9/
I checked myself today. 10/10 recommend
