I used to be obsessed with all things 1940s. There's so much great children's literature set during that era (see also: the original All Creatures Great and Small). Hunh.

I was enchanted by books like Starring Sally J. Freedman, Goodnight Mr. Tom, Summer of my German Soldier (), Number the Stars, The Devil's Arithmetic

So it's evocative of an industrious, victory-garden growing, Rosie the Riveter type of American attitude, but even if you're too young to have missed that, it's still going to catch the generation that lived through the swing revival of the 90s
