#StopAAPIHate #EnoughisEnough

I wish
We didn’t have to pick sides
To save our elders.
I want mainstream media to cover our stories
To report like we’re human beings
But I worry it’ll normalize violence against us
I worry new eyes will get ideas
I hate that they think Math
But I’d hate it more if they thought Murder.
I don’t know what to do
When we call EVERY major news channel
And the ones that call back say It’s Awful
Say It’s Important
Say Our Hearts Are With You
But We Just Don’t Have The Airtime.
I’m bilingual so let me translate:
By Airtime they mean Viewership
And by Viewership they mean Commercial Opportunity
And by Opportunity all I can think of is
How @Nielsen reports say we spend the most
How @comScore reports that say we watch the most
And it's still not enough.
I want justice for our innocent elders
Who aren’t responsible for someone else’s “altered mental states”
Or “whether there was any intent to kill” them
But I don’t know how to fight
When my own community sometimes jumps to race
When our week of hate crimes
Is just someone else’s Sunday
When I know what can happen
When police meet a young man in a hoodie
When police knock into a young woman’s apartment
When the color of your skin
Is already a conviction
Before you’re even inside a judicial system.
I just wish there was a punishment
For hurting Asians in this country.
But don’t want to wait
Till it has to be so widespread
That the news that won't call us back
Calls us Sobering
Till we have to engage in actions
That may break laws
Break buildings
Break records
Just for them to notice
Just because it cost them something.
I know our community
Hasn’t always stood up for others.
But we’re learning
We’re donating
We paid attention last summer
And we’ve been trying
So why is no one coming to us
After listening with both ears
And screaming with one mouth
Where Are You?
I hope the Asians who thought
Their adjacency to whiteness
Made them safe
Are paying attention now.
I didn’t want this to do it
But sometimes it takes a nightmare
To wake up.
I wish we had a near term solution
That didn’t involve
Moving our elders out of their hometowns
Escorting them like their lives need permission
Reinforcing biases they may have had against others
Wondering in a pandemic
If leaving the Motherland that’s been open
Was a mistake.
I love our posting and tagging to raise awareness
But I can’t stop wondering
Who’s silent right now?
Who only speaks up for us
When they have something to sell us?
Why do we still idolize non-experts
Who don’t enact actual policy
Who can’t sustain influence on their own?
Why aren’t we embracing the actual experts
Who are speaking up
Who deserve a stage
Even if they don’t have a name you know?
I wish so many of us weren’t suffering
Between these sides in silence
Like our teeth are eggshells
Inside an echo chamber
That has two lips
Two mouths
But only one we can hear.
So all we have right now is:
Keep screaming till they’re listening
Keep petitioning till we have solutions in writing
Keep allying till all communities are rallying
Because this is too often so senseless
That one hit
One push
One murder
Against someone else
Just means they missed you this time.
