The Oakland Chinatown Coalition held a community call tonight w/ coalition members, organizers, local artists, Chinatown's council member & city council president Nikki Bas, Black allies & longtime residents to update us on community safety efforts. None of them were this. https://twitter.com/latimes/status/1358888119810985985
“We do not endorse any sort of racial profiling. Any sort of vigilante-ism." --the moderator of the Oakland Chinatown Coalition call tonight. An Asian sister/organizer who's been organizing in Oakland Chinatown for years.
250+ ppl were on tonight's call, learning from the Oakland Chinatown Coalition what the ongoing efforts are, what next steps look like, & how the rest of us (esp here in the Bay) can help. They offered google forms, save the dates, concrete ways to help. Not pleads for arrests.
"Safety isn't just a moment: it's a feeling. Can I walk outside and feel happy? Feel joy?" --moderator of tonight's call. She named that the coalition is using transformative justice approaches to ensuring the safety of Chinatown by relying on our community.
Folks from the coalition said they're spending this week processing/healing (as they should) & next week will have more details of how we can support. They named needing help w/ Chinatown's Ambassador Program, their Senior Survivor Program, a solidarity event this weekend, etc.
Folks asked what Black orgs are they working w/ and they named Community Ready Corp, APTP, Curyj, Ella Baker Center, etc. All orgs that Chinatown has long relationships w/. Because that's what a community is. Not grand gestures from celebs who want to arrest our youth.
