My fave scene from "Person of Interest" and the best usage of Pink Floyd's "Welcome to the Machine" I've ever known. It's also one of the most emotional scene's I've ever come across. I don't know how long this will last but, enjoy it while it does:
Person of Interest (PoI) is one of those rare series that not only create human characters that you really care about but also creates a machine character that you care about, albeit one you never see. Major spoiler aler ahead:
You have Harold, the creator of "The Machine". Someone with a past that gradually is revealed over the series.
Then there is John Reese, a character who you think you may know all about but, over time, you learn so much more.
Lionel Fusco, a corrupt cop who becomes so much more than he could have ever imagined.
Samantha Groves, otherwise known as 'Root'. A hacker who starts out as an enemy but eventually becomes something so much more.
Joss Carter, a cop who, after finding out what "The Machine" is, gives everything.
And, of course, one of my favourite characters, Samine Shaw, who gives her life to save "The Machine", or so we thought.
The whole premise of PoI is based around "The Machine" that Harold Finch created to predict terrorison after 9/11.
He did this by creating an atificial intelligence that could 'see' people and predict their movements and so predict what they would do and thus, prevent terrorism.
To prevent breaches of privacy, it's predictions would only be shown by it revealing a person's social security number. No names, no addresses. And only if they were going to be possibly involved in terrorism, according to their actions.
This information was given to the government. As a side effect "The Machine" could also predict those who were about to be involved in a crime, whether as perpertrator or victim. This is where Harold and Mr John Reese came in.
The list of people who would be involved in terrorism was known as the "Relevant" list. The list of people who would be involved in crime was known as the "Irrelevant" list. It was the Irrelevant list that Harold and John were involved in.
After Harold chose John to help, the machine chose Joss Carter and Lionel Fusco (a corrupt cop) to help. Between them they discovered a deep set group of police, called HR, trying to control New York city.
During one investigation, they form an alliance, by accident, with Elias, a gang leader who is taking over New York.
Not long after, Finch is kidnapped by someone only known as Root.
After a long chase, they find out that Root is only interested in looking after "The Machine". She want's to protect it from something called "Samaritan" and Decima Technologies.
