"The paradox of education is precisely this - that as one begins to become conscious
one begins to examine the society in which he is being educated." -James Baldwin. His seminal essay, "A Talk to Teachers" is a seminal call for us to grow our children to critique and
make this country a better place. As @NNSTOY begins the 21 day equity challenge...we start by reading and reflecting on this essay. Although it was written only a couple of months after the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963;
it feels as timely today as it did then. In fact, the first three sentences of this essay could have been written THIS MORNING:
"Let’s begin by saying that we are living through a very dangerous time. Everyone in this room is in one way or another aware of that. We are in a
revolutionary situation, no matter how unpopular that word has become in this country. "
If you haven't joined in on the challenge - I urge anyone who is involved in education in any way to read this text today. Reflect on its words....day 2 brings another opportunity for us to grow smarter together.
