HOW TO DEFEAT BAD DOGMAS

It's not bad ideas that are spreading, but bad ideologies.

All ideologies offer 4 benefits:
- purpose (cause/victims to fight for, enemies to defeat)
- outlet (for depression, anger or dissatisfaction w/life)
- belonging (community of adherents)
- hope
Many ideologues prey on:
- empathy
- desperation
- image (how we want to be perceived by others)
- ignorance (lack of personal experience w/either victims or villains, enabling demonization or lionization)

Reason & facts can never defeat beliefs & ideologies.
When something is rooted in identity, not rationality, all analytical arguments will only serve to harden resistance. They'll dig in deeper. Your charts and graphs are a threat to their identity. They make things **worse**. Data only helps you bond with your team.
So how do you win?
1) Substitution - like alcohol treatments, seek to replace a bad addiction w/a good or harmless one. Alternatives must address all the same needs existing dogma does.
2) Typically, empathy is the entry point. EG you must help those they already see as victims.
3) Personalization is the hardest & most important. Exposure to both victims & victimizers who differ from the constructs in their current ideology. But it must be personal. Almost like bussing/school desegregation. We're at that point again. More on this: https://twitter.com/ideafaktory/status/1188239030397349889?s=20
4) Validation & realization - Offer people the dignity of a soft retreat by making the realization theirs. It cannot be brute-forced otherwise. Let them marinate in the benefits of better beliefs that address their inner needs and renewed personal identity of that enlightenment.
