I've been thinking about this a lot recently & I wanted to share the thoughts with my fellow writers.
Before adding a BDSM smut scene to ur plot-focused story, it's good to examine why it's there, how it could affect the narrative, & if it would even work at all.

Disclaimer: I'm not saying this is the only correct way, I'm not Fic Writing Overlord ™ & I'm certainly not the best. I'm only sharing my rambling cz i like to talk, lol.
* PS: this excludes PWP fics that solely exist for horny reasons, u guys keep doing ur thing hehe

I feel one thing that could drive ur story quality down dramatically is mindlessly adding BDSM in every sex scene, without giving it an actual purpose or questioning why it's there, & especially without proper research. It could very well ruin ur prior character building.
Smut scenes in plot stories r a great way to convey emotions & thoughts u cannot get across in regular situations. They're charged, raw, & full of sensory details as well as emotions & ideas, so use them to ur advantage.
If u wrote this slow burn romance, built me up to a gentle desperate love making scene, & suddenly the character is whipping (lol, pun intended
) out a collar & a leash, or doing things like choking without prior discussion, it's like...?? where did this come from
??

Unfortunately, I know that fic writers often feel pressured to add BDSM or heavy kinks into their writing even if it doesn't work, in fear of being seen as "boring vanilla" (which is a toxic mentality btw, don't listen to ppl who tell u that. Vanilla itself is technically a kink)
If ur truly writing for plot & u spent so much effort trying to say something, think of smut as a tool to elevate ur narrative. DO NOT reduce ur plot to a vehicle for one smut scene. It ruins ur hard work.
Think, does this work? is it necessary? why? For me, bdsm conveys trust. Can be love, manipulation, selfishness, desperation, etc. & if ur MC just doesn't seem the type, don't try to shoe horn it in. It will just give readers (whip)lash (puns again I'm so funny
)

Also, less is more. Don't feel the need to add 5652 kinks in one scene. Use 1 or 2 & polish them up real nice. If ur story benefits from BDSM, or ur narrative overall centers around that, it's more immersive to break the scenes up instead of using one massive smut scene.
