The #PitchWars Agent Showcase is two days away and I’m so excited for all the 2020 mentees!

I’ve been so honored to be the Managing Director this year. Everyone has worked incredibly hard and I can’t wait to celebrate all your future successes!

*Added disclaimer above in case you wanted to skip this part. Some prefer only cheering before the showcase.
This can be the part where things get hard and comparisons and imposter syndrome can take root, and I know it’s easier said than done, but don’t let doubt win.

You revised an entire manuscript on a tight deadline in a pandemic. That alone is amazing. But hopefully you’ve also gained some new skills and made important friendships and had fun. Pitch Wars has always been about community and writers supporting and leaning on each other.
The showcase is wholly unpredictable and it can feel like all your chances come down to this moment. It’s fast-paced and exciting, but it’s NOT the end all, be all and it absolutely DOES NOT define you or your career.
A little of my history: I was a mentee in 2013. My Pitch Wars ms got one request and I didn’t get an agent with that book. I used the skills I learned to write something new and got my agent with that ms in 2014. I didn’t sell a book until 2018. I now have 4 books under contract.
Your journey isn’t going to look like anyone else’s. Some will get agents right away. Fewer will sell right away. Some might do better querying. Some might write something new and query that. These past few months you’ve nailed persistence and growth, the rest is luck and timing.
As long as you don’t give up, you are always in this and it will happen, it’s just a matter of when. Until then, be kind to each other, take care of yourself, step away if need be, and always remember that a complete stranger loved your book and believes in you and your writing.
Success isn’t measured in book deals or agent offers. It’s however you define it. And you now have a whole community behind you wishing you all the success (whatever that looks like to you) in the world
