"When putting your own goal at risk isn't worth possession"

#chelseafc #ktbffh #utc
This season I've seen countless posts from users talking about spamming crosses and the ineffective final 3rd play but what about build-up that has no final ball/cross?

Despite 69% POSS against #SHU the shot count was 9 to 8 with both teams getting only 3 shots on target.
Watching #CHESHU we were clearly trying to play to feet on the ground which is a high-percentage passing strategy but is it the BEST strategy to win the game?

To me, yesterday's game showed that there are players in the team not recognizing space, timing, and pressure.
At times we struggled to diffuse a 2-3 player press because we were unwilling to play air balls into large midfield gaps surrounding #Giroud or space in behind the back line. This caused avoidable errors with the most obvious being #Rudiger's mistake.
The time when a team is most aggressive is also when they are the most vulnerable.

The crux of that statement is whether or not YOU recognize your opponent's weakness.

We were so focused on keeping the ball, we didnt focus on where we could exploit Sheffield.
If you receive the ball on the sideline and you're closed by a defender its often a good strategy to play the ball off the defender as you'll receive a throw-in/corner.

If it goes through you're likely to get in behind - Wolves were able to do this at #LCFC on the left a lot.
Without an understanding of the sideline being both an advantage and disadvantage, you cant begin to use it to its full potential.

I feel that right now we aren't using personnel, space, and timing to create advantages against mid to lower tier opps.
For us to make the #Championsleague we need to make nominal progress in recognizing advantages and moving the ball out of the back into opportunity areas rather than tempting fate playing a 1-dimensional press break in our defensive 3rd. That spells trouble IMO.
