In my Visual Comm class today, as part of our exploration of Drawing as Thinking, i asked Ss to reflect on What is Drawing/Why Draw? I was struck (but not surprised) that not one mentioned skill - all imagination, expression, thinking, stress relief, etc. Some responses + my list
some related things I shared in class that day: @RobGMacfarlane via Ingold on R Long's A Line Made by Walking, @NearSitedMonkey: on movement as language's core, M.Sheets-Johnstone: Movement as our original mode of thinking, Klee: a line is a dot that went for a walk... 2/3
and Barbara Tversky. We do line drawing activities (draw "happy" lines, "angry", etc.), and then self-portrait as line, and finally 3/4
An out of class activity - to make a "story line" of recent period in your life (the past year, time at university, path to school,...) & draw as a line riffing off Tristram Shandy & Kurt Vonnegut's wonderful diagramming Shape of Stories. These come out great! Stay tuned 4/4
for those curious, I detailed the Storyline activity in a thread a year ago: https://twitter.com/Nsousanis/status/1251229289355153408?s=20
