A little Carson Wentz thread because I need to let my insanity on it all out. I mostly blame twitter and my complete desire to let random twitter handles disturb my sanity. And here...we....go.
There's a lot to digest when it comes to the trade as it is perceived. While I do take my shots at Pace, shots he deserves for the way he has lost out on value for a lot of trades (But certainly not the Mack trade), I think he's smart enough to realize this is his last shot
With the Bears record, his well documented top 10 pick swing and misses, etc., it's safe to say that this is probably his last shot at being a GM. he doesn't have tremendous success at a place to give him a second shot at that role. Win games or never be a GM again
It's one thing to say "Ok we got the guy". but it's another right now to say "we got the guy, but because of the compensation for him it's gonna take us 2-3 years to win". The defense _maybe_ has a year left on a championship window. Then you're starting over.
I think yes, Philly wants a Stafford haul. Ask away. But that isn't what any team will do. Giving away 2 picks when you're the Rams because you're instantly a SB contender because you were a QB away makes sense. The Bears/Colts/Panthers are further away
Philly, though, is even FURTHER away. They're in cap HELL. If the reports are right the cap will be $181m at best. That puts the Eagles at $77m over the cap right now. Their highest cap hits are of an aging team over 30
Graham (33) - 18m
Lane Johnson (31) - 18m
Cox (30) - 24m
Slay (30) - 15m
Brooks (32) - 14m
They need to get out of this to free up space and rebuild, which is why they're holding the line for draft picks. Of their top guys, only Graham and Kelce played the full 16 games last yr

If they go and restructure a lot of their guys, they can free up cap...and still be like $30-40m over the expected cap. So this is their way out of starting to go young and build around Hurts. To try and jumpstart their process.
Philly has now created a situation where they almost need to move him. That doesn't increase the value of Wentz. It decreases. If you're telling me it's a 2022 first for Wentz, fine. But the 2021 draft has to be the best haul Pace has ever had in his career.
Wentz is similar to the way Warner used to be in STL in the fact that he will hold the ball as long as possible to let things develop. It worked out well in 17, 18, and 19 when he had a good line. Not so much in 2020 (when he had no line or receivers)
It becomes imperative for the Bears to add a RT in this draft to replace Massie (who almost certainly needs to be cut to create space for Wentz's contract). And you're more likely to get someone at the 20th spot than later on.
I think Pace sees that. Or has to know that. Because if you don't build the line around him (oh and A-Rob has to come back), then this was a waste trade and you cost yourself a job.
