WHY @iamjojo SHOULD BLURB MY BOOK (A Thread)
CW
woman, depose is a collection of hybrid poems detailing the experiences of being a woman. It ranges from the horrors of being assaulted to being empowered by one’s own talent and chosen support system.

Sexist Bullshit.
Growing up in a cult on top of toxic social constructs on gender/sexuality, my experience oftentimes resulted in discomfort, harassment, and even assault. Trying to navigate those issues lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms and pain. However, poetry was there.

Legal Bullshit.
1) Erasure poems of a redacted court doc run throughout the book. This is from my sexual harassment case (that I lost). It took 2 years & I was advised to not publish my work during this time because it could be used against me. My voice silenced nearly broke me.

2) As JoJo had to deal with a lengthy lawsuit with similar restrictions, her interview quote, “It felt like my story was being erased. So, I needed to change the narrative...I’m much more comfortable with honesty than trying to act like I’m a perfect woman,” had to open my book.
Growth Shit.
During the lawsuit, I lost a mother figure to cancer, and my mom abandoning me due to her religious beliefs. Through/after my depression, I came to see what really was apart of my sexuality/identity and what I thought I “had to grow into.” No one owns me or my body.

Successful Shit.
As the book’s closing JoJo quote goes, “Yeah, bitch, I’m still here,” I changed careers. I moved to NYC to get my MFA in poetry. Now I’ve published over 40 poems, essays, interviews, & reviews. I also am honored to teach a highly diverse student body on writing.

Empowerment Shit.
While there has been so much pain, there has been so much stunning shit. While some chose not to support me during this time, some did including new and unexpected friends. There’s so much love and talent in my circle now that I can’t believe I’m this fortunate.

JoJo quotes from her @UPROXX interview both OPEN AND CLOSE this book. She’s inspired me FOR YEARS. Mad Love. literally got me through so much of this book. So, @iamjojo, please read and blurb my book!
