The very undisciplined way I write (letting myself write whatever I want when the mood strikes me and never forcing myself to finish WIPs until that mood strikes) means sometimes it looks like I am doing nothing for months and sometimes it looks like I am a productivity machine.
This is exacerbated by the fact that "outlining a story" and "drafting a story" and "revising/finishing a story" are all very different moods for me, so when I catch the revising mood I can suddenly jam through half a dozen mostly-drafted stories in a month.
If I try to be more disciplined, I throw a lot of stories away because if my mood is wrong then my drafts just look like hopeless unsalvageable garbage. But if I wait until I'm in the right mood, then they usually seem fine.
Anyway I have never seen this "system" discussed in any writing book or class or blog post, and I am not really recommending it. But there it is! As always, the #1 rule is just do whatever you have to do to make sure that today is not the last day you write something.
