Good reportage by @Anja_Popp @Channel4News. Stories like that of 3rd year international medical student, Sola Abigail who is being sent threatening email by @UniofNottingham for being unable to pay her £43K tuition fees are all too common. 1/1
That's why during the 1st lockdown, we wrote to @michelledonelan & @EmmaHardyMP demanding #TuitionFeeAmnestyNOW for international students unable to pay their tuition fees because of £ #COVID19. 530 lecturers, students, & union reps endorsed our demand: https://migrantsrights.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Tuition-Fee-Amnesty-Letter-from-URBC-and-MRN-PDF-1-1.pdf 1/2
@EmmaHardyMP has yet to reply to letter sent in August 2020. But @michelledonelan did reply, giving a computer generated response devoid of any humanity, much less an understanding of the pressing issues international students are facing: https://www.unisresistbordercontrols.org.uk/2020/11/29/michellemocksstudents-minster-of-state-for-universities-responds-to-urbcs-tuitionfeeamnestynow-for-international-students/ 1/3
But don't applaud universities who are now sending funds to food banks supporting the influx of international students who have been made destitute. This is a smokescreen. These students are exploited by their universities & the #HostileEnvironment policy. 1/4
International students need to fight back against the abuses they are facing during lockdown. This is why we urge students having problems paying their tuition fees to contact @UnisNotBorders to get advice & to learn how to use the complaints procedures at your university. 1/5
