everyone knows kaminari has incredible control over his quirk. to have the ability to use millions of volts of electricity and not burn to a crisp is proof of that. and just the same, everyone knows his quirk has obvious drawbacks.
his entire class has seen how he gets when his quirk fries his brain, has seen the shaky thumbs up and the droopy grin to let them know he’s still okay, despite being unable to really speak.
so it comes as a shock to his classmates that after a fight against a group of villains that infiltrated the campus, after kaminari nearly blinded them with the lightning arcing off of his body in thick, undulating waves, there was no thumbs up, no shaky smile.
instead, they watched as kaminari fell to his knees, eyes vacant. his body was covered in scorch marks shaped like lightning. deku was at his side in seconds, a blur of green lightning and kicked up dirt as he skidded to a halt in front of the blond.
“kaminari? kaminari, can you hear me? what’s wrong?” he asked, clutching at his friends face with shaking hands. staring into the eyes of his friend, he realized something horrifying. there was no life behind his eyes, no sign that kaminari was in there at all.
“denki, denki please, please,” he sobbed, turning to his classmates who were watching with equally horrified looks. “what do we do?”

it was aizawa who answered the question, gently prying midoriya’s hands away from his other student.
“come on kid, let go, there’s nothing you can do for him now.”

“but he - he’s going to be okay right? he has to be okay,” deku said, hands falling limply to his sides.

for the first time since he had known him, deku saw his teacher hesitate to answer.
“i wish i could say yes, problem child. i really wish i could say yes.”
