I don’t normally tweet about YA books, but just finished Malinda Lo’s Last Night at the Telegraph Club, and found it an amazing exploration of the intersection between queer and Asian American lives in 1950s San Francisco. Inspired by tantalizing
but fragmentary historical evidence, Lo's book brings together these two worlds through the love story of two teen girls. Beautifully written and impeccably researched, this book captures a little-known, but extremely important chapter of American history.
Lo conveys a powerful sense of early 1950s life in and around San Francisco’s Chinatown and within diverse Chinese families and the larger Chinese American community. She also offers glimpses into the city’s lesbian sub-culture, in particular the few clubs that catered to queer
women (and teens) during an era when few such outlets existed and gay people remained marginalized and stigmatized. One of the best examples of historical fiction I've read in a very long time, and one of the most important. @malindalo
