I’ll answer in a thread. Really, it’s for two reasons 1) there is plenty of evidence pronoun use simply correlates with a very narrow political outlook that I don’t want to be associated with 2) there is no persuasive argument that pronoun usage helps trans people. https://twitter.com/drgbuckingham/status/1358847866786238464
On (1), pronoun advertisement in bios almost always correlates perfectly with being Woke/Social Justicy, and one can predict someone’s politics on almost everything based on this proxy (and likewise, there is no across-person political diversity). So it’s not just abt inclusion.
If it were simply about inclusion and not consciously or subconsciously a political signal, then you’d expect broader political diversity among users, and minimal use in cis-only spaces (which is where most of this occurs).
“Performative” Pronoun use is almost exclusively used in mid-to-upper class fashionable left-wing and cis/white circles. It’s almost never used to let present trans people know they can simply use their pronouns without problem. Why would it be a problem anyway? Anyway onto (2)..
If a man-turned-women wanted me to use she/her, I absolutely would. But there’s no reason to believe me telling everyone I’m a “him” in introductions normalizes this, or is more inclusive, anymore than using a wheelchair ramp normalizes disability access.
...or using sign language normalizes other communication styles outside of speaking. If you want to use it, use it, but being part of a <1% of the population confers some responsibility for you to accommodate to other styles, rather than the other way around.
So the argument that signaling pronouns requires little effort is vacuous. It may not, but it also enables incoherent and arguably harmful expectations.
There are a million conceivable ways to do some act that “includes” someone else in the same sense. What if I wrote with my left hand to make lefties know they are welcome? Or wrapped myself on ropes to make BDSM folk welcome? None of this makes sense.
More fundamentally, there’s a superior model for inclusion, a healthy liberalism, which is just to let people do what they want and let people tearing down others to fuck off.
Man turned woman* above. Unless they want to be multiple people, I’m not sure I’d be on board entertaining that tbh.
