Close readers will note that I always put "water treatment plants" first in my line up of remotely hackable infrastructure. It's because this is the attack scenario that freaked me out the most. Someone tried it out Friday in Florida (unsuccessfully).
A hacker tried to change the sodium hydroxide level from 100 parts per million to 11,100 ppm+. This was also an attack scenario that played out in Israel last April, when Israelis accused Iran of getting into their water treatment plant. Israel responded with a hack of Iran port.
To date, these attacks have been near misses (see Iranian attack on the "wrong" Bowman dam). Yet, we continue to see determined hackers poking/probing these systems. We're warned of "Cyber Pearl Harbor" bombs but water contamination is a silent, though no less deadly, threat.
Yesterday, while blissfully unaware this happened Friday.
