10 things that help me write.

*Not so much a writing how-to in the traditional sense; it’s more of a HOW-I-do.*

Thread!
1. A really nice desk chair.

8 mos into freelancing, my back started to hurt. No matter much yoga or standing I did, it was a problem.

I finally decided to invest in the Herman Miller Aeron chair.

Maybe the BEST purchase I’ve made that helps me write. http://amzn.to/2CwVF0d
2. A large desktop monitor.

I tried working laptop when I started freelance writing, but the screen was too small for the split-screen view I like while researching + writing.

I upgraded to the 27-inch iMac, & it’s been a major improvement workflow-wise. http://amzn.to/2CtWSp5
3. Steno pads.

I have to write down notes and ideas when I’m writing...on paper.

It’s just part of the process.

I prefer Steno pads because they’re small + easy to flip through when I need to find something a few pages back. Plus, they don’t take up too much room on my desk.
4. Whiteboard

My steno pad is for writing notes, but the whiteboard is for project to-do items and business to-do items.

I can be fairly forgetful, so a daily/monthly list of action items here keeps me sane and on track. https://amzn.to/2YV8PQH
5. Mini space heater

In Illinois, it gets really cold between November-April. It’s hard for me to concentrate on writing when I’m shivering.

Got this mini space heater a few years ago and it’s been a lifesaver for my always-cold feet. https://amzn.to/2YYaPaY
6. Desk lamp

I don’t want my home office to feel like a cave, so a good lamp has been helpful (especially when it starts getting dark in the afternoon.)

I like this one because it can change color tone + intensity. https://amzn.to/36VFJF1
7. My freelance “uniform”

Most days when I don’t have calls or meetings, I wear pretty much the same thing: A t-shirt, sweatpants, wool socks, and a sweatshirt.

Being comfortable helps me focus on the work I need to do. Lately I'm loving Jambys and Feat joggers.
8. Good coffee.

Kind of a 'duh', but if I didn't have @tradecoffeeco or @Vervecoffee in the morning, the words just wouldn't flow.
10. Finally: Airpods.

If you need to work in silence and block out the noise and distractions around you, these do the trick.

I mostly listen to @BrainfmApp or @CalmedByNature.
