TEN ALBUMS, TEN ARTISTS, ONE DECADE: THE 2010s

I’ve come up with a challenge to pick the best hip hop album from every year in the 2010s, but the catch is, no artist can feature more than once!

Please retweet!
I’ll be tagging 3 others to try this but would love to see yours too
2010: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - Kanye West

So grand. So epic. This unforgettable ride through Kanye’s complicated relationship with fame and stardom is an undisputed masterpiece, from the inspired lyricism to the flawless production.

Favourite Song: Runaway
2011: Take Care - Drake

Drake wears his heart on his sleeve in this sumptuous blend of Hip Hop and R&B. The production effortlessly jumps from brooding and atmospheric to lively and upbeat with Drake bringing the best out of every beat.

Favourite Song: Look What You’ve Done
2012: Good Kid, M.A.A.D City - Kendrick Lamar

A triumph in storytelling. An exhilarating ride through K-Dot’s Compton misadventures, leading him to question gang life and start a new chapter. Lyrically sublime and sonically invigorating.

Favourite Song: The Art Of Peer Pressure
2013: My Name Is My Name - Pusha-T

Pusha-T spits the dark street stories of an unapologetic drug dealer doing whatever it takes to succeed over bold and busy beats. The remarkable writing and powerful sound to the record make it my pick for 2013.

Favourite Song: King Push
2014: 2014 Forest Hills Drive - J Cole

Cole’s brilliant word play and remarkable flows keep the listening experience fresh without a single feature! The excellent storytelling and twinkling, orchestral production create a wonderul nostalgic feel.

Favourite Song: No Role Modelz
2015: DS2 - Future

An undeniable trap classic. The dynamic electro production sets the tempo for Future to spit one catchy hook after another. Future knows he’s making hits here and his swagger is unmatched.

Favourite Song: Slave Master
2016: SremmLife 2 - Rae Sremmurd

This is everything I love in a contemporary pop-rap record! The duo provide infectious energy throughout the many hits this album boasts, with the emphatic production matching their performance.

Favourite Song: Look Alive
2017: 4:44 - Jay-Z

A personal, soulful and honest collection of songs from a rapper showing he has matured with age. More melodic and heartfelt than a lot of his early work, it’s beautiful hearing Hov let go of his ego and provide us with this gem.

Favourite Song: Marcy Me
2018: ASTROWORLD - Travis Scott

Startling, futuristic production met with vibrant lyrical performances from Travis make this a thrilling listen. Sometimes jaunty, sometimes more sombre, Travis and the amazing features make this album a real sensation.

Favourite Song: SKELETONS
2019: IGOR - Tyler, The Creator

Arguably not a rap album, I know. But what I also know is that Tyler’s creativity and vulnerability send listeners cascading through the emotions of a turbulent breakup. An eerie, emotional, bold, masterpiece.

Favourite Song: A BOY IS A GUN*
