how c!wilbur is one of the most influential characters in terms of c!dream's development, specifically his "corruption arc" into becoming the "villain":
first, some disclaimers:
i LOVE c!wilbur. he's such an interesting character, and his pov was probably the one i watched most frequently for Actual Lore Streams in s1. his fall from grace was so brilliantly acted and he's. SO well written.

THAT BEING SAID ,, , if you really like c!wilbur and dont like seeing negativity abt him ,, this thread isnt. uh. for you. ur pov is valid! i just,, dont necessarily agree with it, and this is gonna be about a lot of negative effects bc of his character's actions.
please, this isnt meant to offend anyone, this isnt meant to start a fight or to say that c!wilbur was a terrible person or anything ,, it's just analyzing how his character's actions affected dream's character's development on the smp. that is all.
and final disclaimer: per usual, i am not saying anything that c!dream did was ok. he did crappy things. those things are justified, just a little more *explained* through this pov. and again, my interpretation is not everyone's interpretation. it is FICTION.
NOW THAT WE'RE DONE WITH ALL OF THAT, ONTO THE MINECRAFT ROLEPLAY
c!wilbur ,, is an interesting character. we see most events through his pov during season one, or through the pov of his friends that ADORE him and think of him as a hero for a good majority of the season, such as c!tommy
but looking beyond their povs ,, honestly he's . uh. not all that noble??
he creation of lmanburg was to create AN ILLEGAL DRUG EMPIRE where they stole stuff from other people to resell at higher prices and get them addicted. like that was the PLAN.
he creation of lmanburg was to create AN ILLEGAL DRUG EMPIRE where they stole stuff from other people to resell at higher prices and get them addicted. like that was the PLAN.
wilbur drags in tommy from whatever tommy's doing, says "hey im gonna make cash wanna help", , and c!tommy being c!tommy and even at this point, unfalteringly loyal to everyone but ESPECIALLY c!wilbur,, agrees.
like, at this point it's for POWER. its for MONEY. he wants to create a drug empire to get control over everyone and c!tommy doesnt care as long as c!tubbo and c!wilbur are happy so he comes along.
and like, , we know how this goes. c!sapnap finds out, chases them, tries to get them to stop, c!wilbur and c!tommy run away from the law and decide to create lmanburg. c!dream ,, is not around for any of this
and you know?? the creation of lmanburg REALLY bothers me sometimes ,, bc what was it REALLY created for? it started as a drug empire that was thwarted by the law, and so c!wilbur decides to ,, claim this piece of land as his own??? EXCLUDE half of the server from coming in????
he's literally a fugitive after committing numerous illegal activities and dragging a CHILD into his mess and in order to get out of it, he's creating a whole new "country" bc of "tyranny" from a leader that wasnt even THERE when the first conflict happened
how is? c!dream tyrannical at this point ???
like he literally lets c!tommy do whatever (and i mean whatever) the hell he wants,, only ever coming in to fix the prime path or tubbo's house or step in if conflict is becoming particularly ugly (like w/ sapnap and tommy)
like he literally lets c!tommy do whatever (and i mean whatever) the hell he wants,, only ever coming in to fix the prime path or tubbo's house or step in if conflict is becoming particularly ugly (like w/ sapnap and tommy)
he's got like three rules (dont steal, dont grief, dont go to the end) and is super lenient with enforcing any of them ,, mostly just letting c!tommy and c!tubbo run wild like?? he really doesnt control anything at ALL
if anything, C!WILBUR is the power hungry one here, creating a drug van in the hopes of a drug empire, wanting monetary control over the server, having tommy and tubbo fight his battles and build his walls, making a country to keep out half of the server for his own place to rule
but you know what the lmanburg anthem says ?? it calls c!dream brutal !! it calls him a tyrant !! he's not even around and immediately c!wilbur's already decided that c!dream is A Villain, someone that is A Terrible Person to Fight ,, an Oppressor to Rebel Against
AND FOR WHAT?? ? for disallowing him from making a DRUG EMPIRE ?? for saying he cant just bar half of the server from this little chunk of land ??? what was the dang POINT ???
in one fell swoop, c!wilbur convinces HALF OF THE SERVER, people c!dream considered his FRIENDS that c!dream is a terrible, awful villainous ruler that oppressed them all ,, that he was a TYRANT that needed to be stopped
people talk about how c!wilbur broke under the stress of being president of lmanburg but what about c!dream??? c!wilbur, at least, CHOSE the position of power he was given - nobody forced him to make lmanburg! nobody forced him to become president!
c!dream, on the other hand, clearly never intended dreamsmp to be a country at all, as is evident by the lack of a real like, , name for the place, or clearly defined borders. it's literally just a world for his friends to call home!! for himself to call home !!
but suddenly he's being framed as a tyrant and a terrible power-hungry ruler by one half of his friends (after not being like, even AROUND for a day or so) and looked to as the Leader That Will Do What Is Best by the other half,, expected to decide whether to declare war or not
c!dream saw himself as like,, a peace-keeper, probably bc of his ties to the server itself, but never a political leader - but suddenly he's FORCED into this position of a military general and political leader, expected to hold the entire server together by sheer force of will
all while given NO time to process the betrayal of literally HALF OF HIS FRIENDS who suddenly apparently hate his guts and would rather die than "submit" to his rule - which has always been nothing more than "dont be an ahole"
over the course of a NIGHT c!dream becomes The Villain of the server, betrayed by his friends, looked to for guidance in a situation he has NO experience in, and forced to decide between his friends and the stability of his world, all while dealing with his own feelings
moving on from the lmanburg revolution ,, which basically PERMANENTLY destroyed his relationship with like half of the people on his server that he cares abt, even despite his attempts to keep the violence as short as possible
(check out this thread i made on how dreamsmp's actions in the revolution could be attributed to them making it as Short and therefore do as little damage as possible) https://twitter.com/dr3amofagame/status/1357510533637939201
and his eventual mercy in granting them independence, giving c!tommy two separate chances to try and earn lmanburg's independence (and like yeah the duel Sucked but it was also proposed by c!tommy, not c!dream) when he couldve just demanded the discs in the treaty
like, c!dream's decisions through all of this werent all the best ,, but he was in a REALLY stressful, messed up situation where he had to choose between the safety of several people he cared abt and the peace of the place he called home
all while dealing with his own messy, conflicted emotions abt half of his friends ditching him so easily and hating him so viciously , , AND struggling with the responsibility of a nation he never asked for like ??
after this he kinda obviously distances himself from lmanburg, only popping up once during the election to screw around with schlatt a bit - and then to his surprise, ,, schlatt Wins.
so besides the guilt of "oh no, the guy i endorsed won and now my server's falling apart again and It's All My Fault" he's STILL dealing with people treating him as a villain
once again, it's c!dream in a terrible position, having to choose between the server's stability and the people he cares abt !! is he going to go against a peace treaty and therefore be seen as a power-hungry tyrant trying to get lmanburg for himself
or is he going to abandon the people that he considered his friends, even though their relationship hasnt been the same ever since one of them decided that he was a tyrant and a terrible person and the other followed him?
c!dream is constantly shoved in the DEFINITIONS of lose-lose situations, trying to decide which ones will allow him to do the most help while avoiding the most hurt,, choosing between "this will suck for this half of my friends" and "this will suck for that half of my friends"
so he tries to work around all of this right? keeping up appearances with manburg while giving pogtopia supplies in the shadows, mostly working alone (bc even here, c!dream is constantly Very Much Alone) and also dealing with the headaches of whatever sapnap's doing
he doesnt get any support, he doesnt get anybody trying to help him - instead, he's constantly jumping from one side of the server to the other, pulled in to mediate this conflict and asked by that person for supplies etc etc etc
forced into more TERRIBLE decisions - choose between all you have left of your only and favorite pet and the fishes of your friends,, choose between helping the kid you promised you'd help and your best friend who's making very stupid decisions ,, and on and on and on
and through all of this c!dream is still VERY DEEPLY AFFECTED by people's perceptions of him during the first war! in Tyrant, he writes "Last time I tried to take a stand on behalf Dream SMP I was touted as the villain. This time, I cant involve myself."
he's stretching himself thin, trying his VERY GODDAMN BEST to not be the villain everyone seems to think he is, doing all that he can to earn the trust of c!wilbur and c!tommy, staying in manburg's good graces, trying to keep his server (his home, his family) from falling apart
and then ???
c!wilbur's turn - "are we the bad guys?"
c!wilbur's turn - "are we the bad guys?"
of ANYONE ,, c!dream would know the most abt what it means to be considered a "bad guy", a "villain". of ANYONE, he would know the damage that would do.
"how much would you say that me and tommy are,,, kinda the bad guys?
"how much would you say that me and tommy are,,, kinda the bad guys?
"i- i dont think that you guys are the bad guys"
and of course c!dream would say this ,, despite how much c!wilbur and c!tommy's actions have hurt him in the past, he's already begun to internalize his role as the villain - or at least, the villain of the revolution
and of course c!dream would say this ,, despite how much c!wilbur and c!tommy's actions have hurt him in the past, he's already begun to internalize his role as the villain - or at least, the villain of the revolution
and throughout this arc, so far, he's trying very desperately to redeem himself as the "hero" again, just like wilbur and tommy were the "heroes"
and c!wilbur SHATTERS this worldview - he first presents that the lmanburg revolution mightve been the fault of *wilbur and tommy* ,, not c!dream, which of course gives the poor guy whiplash bc he's been trying so hard to move past that
and then c!wilbur says this:
"you have vested interest, though. i think that you would enjoy there to be conflict between manburg and pogtopia [dream begins to object] - and you know- you know im here to facilitate that! "
"you have vested interest, though. i think that you would enjoy there to be conflict between manburg and pogtopia [dream begins to object] - and you know- you know im here to facilitate that! "
dream: "i dont- i think that jschlatt's a little more ,, ambitious than you, id say-"
wilbur: "dream, let me be your vassal. i understand that you have a lot of tnt..."
dream, quietly: "i do..."
wilbur: "dream, let me be your vassal. i understand that you have a lot of tnt..."
dream, quietly: "i do..."
(note: this transcript is being taken from wilbur's video "am i the villain {dream smp)" not the actual stream)
tommy: dream, dream don't give it to him
and then dream, quiet, resigned: i have to
tommy: dream, dream don't give it to him
and then dream, quiet, resigned: i have to
wilbur: dream, dream i appreciate- you see, you see the thing is tommy what youre not understanding is dream doesnt want us to win! dream just wants both manburg and pogtopia to be weak!
dream: i do want pogtopia and manburg to be nothing more and i want lmanburg to be something
dream, about not caring about lmanburg anymore: i had a change of heart
dream: if you need any help,, just let me know
dream, about not caring about lmanburg anymore: i had a change of heart
dream: if you need any help,, just let me know
some have painted this exchange as *dream* manipulating *wilbur* which i will never understand, , if anything, it's the other way around. dream has very little, if any control in the conversation
he's struggling to rationalize his own feelings w/ lmanburg w/ whatever the hell wilbur is saying ,, trying not to let his own feelings abt being treated and called a villain to influence what he says when wilbur asks if *HE* is a villain
and wilbur is CONSTANTLY putting words in his mouth - saying dream doesnt care about us, dream doesnt care about pogtopia, dream wants all to be weak, dream is Still The Villain
and dream is kinda,, struggling a LOT bc he's just tried SO HARD to align himself with the heroes, with wilbur and tommy to Do The Right Thing ,, and AGAIN he's on the "villains'" side,, AGAIN he's nothing more than a bad guy
even after EVERYTHING HE'S DONE FOR THEM they still see him as nothing but a villain - wilbur still sees him as "one step in front of everyone", as a villain using them for his own benefit ,, tommy still doesnt trust him, doesnt see him as anything more than a tyrant
and then ,, he's shoved into a final lose-lose situation.
will he or will he not give wilbur the tnt?
will he or will he not give wilbur the tnt?
if he does, then tommy will probably stop trusting him at all for good, , he's giving into wilbur's demands, becoming the villain wilbur had always painted him as. lmanburg will probably be blown to smithereens, his own server, home, destroyed
if he doesn't, though? then he's failed to be their ally - he's failed in his promise to "help" them whenever they ask, failed to give them the support they need. he's only going to further spur on c!wilbur's madness and paranoia, becoming the villain standing against them again
either way, he's still stuck as the villain. still stuck as the power-hungry, manipulative tyrant that wilbur has ALWAYS painted him as ,, still forced to play this awful part of a story that he never wanted, never asked for.
there's no "good" option - either way leads to him betraying one of the two members of pogtopia, and probably betraying both in the long run, either by not helping them enough so that they lose or helping them too much so that lmanburg ends up being a hole in the ground
even the book trade cements this repeated cycle that c!dream ends up of choosing between this sucky thing and that sucky thing - choose between siding with a dictator for the possibility of saving EVERYONE from a future death, or condemn everyone to permanent death
by keeping himself "the hero" and siding with his friends.
throught s1, , dream is the "villain" not bc of any actions of his own, but bc of everyone around him forcing him to be one. and all of this leads into his final ,, acceptance, of this role at the end of s1,
throught s1, , dream is the "villain" not bc of any actions of his own, but bc of everyone around him forcing him to be one. and all of this leads into his final ,, acceptance, of this role at the end of s1,
and embracing of it through s2 - if all he can do is be the villain, if no matter what he does or what he tries to do people are only ever going to leave and call him a bad guy, then he might as well do something *good* with his villainy before being locked away forever, right?
