A close relative of Nargacuga known to inhabit frigid environments, Barioth is a sabretooth-like flying wyvern whose speed and swift movements easily rival Nargacuga's, despite it living in harsher places.
Unlike Nargacuga, Barioth has a lightweight shell covering a majority of its body from head to tail. Despite its lightweight nature, its shell is surprisingly strong and durable and resembles an ice floe.
Like Nargacuga, Barioth has fur on some portions of its body. Its silky-smooth white pelt has excellent shock absorption properties, and some say it feels like being wrapped in angel wings. Nobles often use Barioth's fur as a symbol of authority.
Barioth is a quadruped like Nargacuga, making this monster surprisingly fast and swift on land compared to other flying wyverns, but its wings are quite developed. While Nargacuga is specialized in land combat, Barioth is specialized in both land and aerial combat.
Amongst the flying wyverns, Barioth is considered to be one of the best flyers within the classification. Barioth is known to often fly into the air and attack from above, especially when being chased by enemies.
On Barioth's wings are specialized spike-like scales that it uses to hook into the snow and ice in its environment, preventing the monster from sliding around and slipping on the frozen ground as it moves. It can even cling onto walls with these spikes.
Barioth can remain quick on its feet in its environment and outmaneuver prey with the help of those spikes. However, if these spikes are heavily damaged and broken, Barioth will lose its footing easily, leaving the monster vulnerable to a counterattack from its enemies.
Its tail is covered in a hard plate that can easily tear through the ice in its environment with a single swing. Like its wings, countless spikes adorn its tail. Barioth primarily uses its wings to attack smaller prey, but it'll use its amber-colored tusks for larger prey.
Many of the creatures that Barioth preys upon, such as Popo, have thick fur and fat to keep them warm in their environment, making it hard for predators to leave deep wounds in them. To get through the fat and fur of its prey, Barioth evolved long tusks.
Barioth uses these amber-colored tusks to bite into the vital points of prey, such as the neck. It also uses them to leave deep wounds in prey, causing its quarry to bleed to death.
When eating, Barioth will use its tusks like a knife to rip open its prey. It feeds on the internal organs and fat of its prey first, so it can gain the necessary energy/vitamins it needs to fully function in its frigid environment.
Despite inhabiting tundras, Barioth is an active predator. It's capable of adjusting its eyes to pick up a certain amount of light in its environment.
While out in the open in the middle of the day, Barioth is known to squint its eyes to adjust the amount of light that enters them. At night or in dark caves, Barioth is known to keep its eyes wide open, causing them to reflect light and glow in the dark.
Besides attacking its enemies with its wings, tail, and tusks, Barioth is also capable of breathing an icy tornado from its mouth that'll both damage and encase its foes in snow.
Inside of Barioth's body is a frost sac that contains a cold liquid that can freeze prey in an instant. Barioth will breathe in air before spitting out the liquid, and, as Barioth does so, its lungs and frost sac will contract, forming a spiraling current of air.
The liquid picks up speed as it passes through its respiratory tract, and the liquid will become a blanket of ice the moment it touches the outside air due to the moisture in the atmosphere.
Once fired from its mouth, the projectile will turn into an icy tornado. It uses this breath-based attack to capture prey, preventing creatures from escaping its grasp.
Barioth are highly aggressive flying wyverns that are normally solitary in nature. However, males will venture into the territories of females during the breeding season.
A female Barioth chooses her mate by looking at the shape of the male's tusks, which is an indicator to her whether he's a suitable mate or not. A male Barioth that has lost his tusks doesn't have a high chance of mating with a female.
Once the pair has mated, the pregnant female will hide in frozen caves within her territory before eventually giving birth to two-three cubs. She'll hide her cubs in those same caves for protection against predators and the elements until they get older.
Out of all the monsters to inhabit colder climates, Barioth is considered to be the most dangerous one due to how active it is. Many travelers fear encountering this flying wyvern during their travels.
From it resembling a legendary knight that once stood in the tundra, Barioth is sometimes called the "White Knight" or "Swift Knight."
